How did people get wavy or curly hair before curling irons and perms?

How did people curl or get their hair wavy before the invention of a curling iron or perms? I know in the 1800's they used an iron rod and heated it and wrapped the hair around that for the curls but what about waves? What about earlier times? Thanks! How did people get wavy or curly hair before curling irons and perms?
a quick trick to get wavy hair is to braid your hair while its wet and let it dry naturally. the trick with this is to lightly spray it with some hairspray and to blow dry it if you need to get somewhere quickly and prefer to shower in the morning. if you don't mind showering at night, braid it and let it dry while you sleep!

if you want more ringlet style curls, tear up strips of cloth or get some ribbon. take strips of hair and twist it then loop it up into small circles and tie it with the cloth. again, blow dry it if you shower in the morning or let it dry overnight if you shower at night! How did people get wavy or curly hair before curling irons and perms?
They used curlers for their hair. You take a section of hair, and wrap it around the curler. For looser curls, bigger curlers were used. For smaller curls, tighter curlers were used. Before that, they most likely used wigs.
natural, scrunched it, used pens and pencils and wrapped hair around it then hair sprayed it i had to do that for a cheer Competition two years ago lol

Curlers, you wrap your hair around a little velcro-like cylinder and sleep with it, then you have undamaged and curled hair.
