Curly/kinky hair is a much better protection against UV light. It has been shown that straight hair acts as optical fibers guiding the UV light to the skin. So straight hair is an advantage in Nordic countries (you need UV to produce vitamin D) and kinky hair is an advantage in the hot African sun.
The other advantage of curly hair is that it creates air pockets, keeping the head cooler.
